School based mentoring is a program utilized by school systems to help facilitate a positive healthy and safe climate and culture by promoting Healthy Hearts and Healthy Minds.  HHHM school based mentoring program uses in school/community mentors to assist with positive, nurturing, hands on daily interaction and interventions when needed.  The purpose of this program is to take a holistic eclectic approach based on community and school merging together so that the student can achieve their best.

85% of population at Dunbar Middle School said they were satisfied with the overall performance of the mentoring program.

Here are some statements made by staff, students, administrators and parents of Dunbar Middle School 2009/2010 school year:

 Students: 
“My grades have improved with the help of the mentor”
“Our behavior has improved since the beginning of the year”
“Mentor talks to our teacher about our academic and behavior progress” ·
“They teach us how to be leaders and not followers”
“Mentoring staff will always have positive things to say to help you with your problem”

Administrator:
“Mentors are usually controlling the student’s behavior in the cafeteria, hallways and classroom”
“Mentors are always providing assistance for conflict resolutions of students involved in aggressive verbal and physical behaviors”

Teachers:
“Mentors help the teachers and police to control the student’s behavior”
“Mentors are present sometimes when we meet with students and parents to discuss academics and behavior issues”
“It seems like the students respect the mentors and listen to them”
“It is positive how they connect with the student on a personal level”
“I have seen them address stereo types and disadvantages in a way that promotes positive choice”

Parents:
“70% of parent reported that they feel their child has improved since being in the mentoring program”
“88% would recommend mentoring program to another parent”
“85% stated they were satisfied with the overall performance of the mentoring program”
